Boreal forest is a sustainable ecosystem

Boreal forest is one of the most sustainable ecosystems. So are also the ways by which humans use this ecosystem. All its products are renewable and althought by far the most important of them is wood, other forest products also have great importance.

Boreals forest regenerates after loggings by itself, too. In spite of this in Finland more trees are regenerated than felled due to seedling, planting and natural regeneration. The most effective way is natural regeneration: four out of five trees growing in Finland are regenerated naturally.

Finlandīs forest is a mosaic of trees of different ages and species. All tree species used in regeneration are indigenous to Finland and other forest species are naturally adapted to them. Genetically modified trees are not used. The growing stock of wood in Finland has increased after the World War II by one third. At the same time the amount of stout trees has increased twice or more, depending on the tree species. The average age of forests has also grown significantly.

The main product of Finnish forest is wood, which is renewable and ecological natural resource. Without sustainable use of such natural resources it is impossible for the mankind to face its present and future challenges.
